There is something wonderfully honest about a piece of Tamegroute pottery that hasn't tried to be perfect.
This beautiful pitcher comes from the traditional pottery village of Tamegroute in southern Morocco, where pottery has been made by hand and fired in wood burning kilns for generations. Its deep green glaze has a wonderful richness and movement, with the traditional firing process leaving the surface with subtle variations, texture and colour that could never be reproduced exactly.
Look closely, and you can see that this is very much a handmade piece. The body isn't perfectly symmetrical, with a gentle bias towards one side when viewed from either the front or the back. Rather than detracting from its beauty, that slight irregularity is part of its charm, a reminder that this was shaped by hand rather than turned out by a machine.
The glaze is equally full of character. Rich emerald and olive green tones move across the surface, catching the light differently over the textured terracotta beneath. The spontaneous nature of the wood firing means that no two pieces emerge from the kiln quite alike.
It is precisely this combination of natural materials, primitive hand craftsmanship and unpredictability that draws us to Tamegroute pottery at Dusty Gems. It sits beautifully amongst rustic European antiques, weathered woods and natural linens, bringing a little of the warmth and colour of southern Morocco into a country interior.
A wonderful piece for a kitchen, open shelving or simply displayed on its own, where its beautiful shape and richly glazed surface can be appreciated.
