This beautiful antique Buckley pottery pancheon bowl was handmade in early 19th Century Flintshire, North Wales. It features the iconic Buckley black glaze, a deep Tar black finish created by layering an iron rich glaze over a rich plum red base. A lovely example of Welsh vernacular pottery, this rustic bowl tells its story through its worn surface.

The interior and lip are fully glazed, and the exterior bears distinctive glaze marks from the potters fingers. Far from random, these may have once served as decoration or identification. Made from heavy, dark terracotta packed with inclusions, the base has worn very smooth from years of use and has one very old worn chip; the rest of the bowl is free of chips and cracks, with the glaze worn in places.

Originally a utilitarian kitchen piece, this pancheon now makes a striking decorative bowl. Use it for fruit, as a centrepiece on a rustic table, or even in a bathroom for hand towels; its timeless character suits any room.
