Antique Hungarian Oak Tulip Chopping Board

There is something rather special about an old wooden chopping board that has found its way from the kitchen into the world of decorative interiors. Especially when it has a shape as lovely as this.

This antique Hungarian oak chopping board is one of our favourite styles, with its distinctive tulip shaped outline and long handle. The form is reminiscent of the tulips painted on traditional Hungarian marriage chests, giving this practical kitchen object a lovely connection to the country's folk art traditions.

Made from solid oak, it has a reassuring weight in the hand and the beautiful, natural character that comes with age. The surface carries a few honest cutting scars from its working life, but not too many, and the wood has a wonderful warmth and texture.

It is easy to imagine this board in a Hungarian farmhouse kitchen, being brought out for the preparation of bread, cheese and everyday food. Today, it would make a beautiful addition to a rustic European kitchen, displayed alongside antique pottery, wooden utensils and natural linens.
