The lantern retains three of its original translucent horn panes (two with minor damage that only adds to its authentic rustic charm) and boasts a wonderfully oxidised patina. Before glass became common, horn was prized for its durability and ability to diffuse candlelight warmly, as Gertrude Jekyll noted, "The shape of horn lanterns especially, which to this present century continued to follow the old Gothic lines, clearly showed for how many centuries this useful object had typified a need of man.”
