This beautifully aged French cider bottle, known locally as a Bouteille Longue or "long bottle," captures everything we love about primitive 19th-century pottery from rural Brittany.
Thrown on a stick lathe and crafted from coarse terracotta clay dug from the Goulande sandstone quarry, its bumpy, irregular body speaks to its handmade origin. The wood-fired finish has left wonderful, flame-licked blooms in soft reds and oranges across the surface, adding warmth and depth to the aged clay.
One particularly charming detail is the neck, which has been wrapped in linen cloth at some point in its life—possibly for grip or simply tradition. Either way, it adds authentic rustic charm and a sense of human touch.
Originally used to store perry, cider, or oil, this piece now makes a beautifully sculptural object for the rustic home. Style it as a bud vase, a candle holder on a seasonal tablescape, or simply let it stand alone on a shelf or sideboard for timeless country character.
