An exceptionally handsome and increasingly scarce early 19th century French confit pot (circa 1800–1820), originating from Castelnaudary. Raised on a rare, early footed base and retaining one of its elegantly arched handles, this large and heavy vessel features a rich, dark caramel mustard glaze alive with dramatic kiln runs and flames, a magnificent "Working Stiff" centrepiece for a neutral, modern rustic home.

 Dating to the very beginning of the 19th century, this pot possesses the refined silhouette and pleasing proportions prized in the earliest provincial examples. Hand thrown in buff terracotta, the upper body is finished in the deep, lustrous mustard glaze traditionally associated with the Castelnaudary region, displaying an extraordinary depth of colour that ranges from warm honey to deep amber and rich caramel.

During its firing over two centuries ago, this pot was stacked upside down in a wood-burning kiln. The intense heat caused the glaze from neighbouring pots above to cascade down its body, leaving behind unique, accidental caramel trails and olive-green flame markings that can never be replicated. One of its handles was lost during its long working life in rural France, an honest testament to its daily utility. The unglazed lower half has a soft, chalky patina that provides a beautiful, tactile contrast to the heavily pooled, glossy glaze at the rim.
