French Porte-Couvertes – Rare Rustic Cutlery Holder

Exquisite Provençal Kitchenware

This exceptional 19th-century French Porte-Couvertes (cutlery holder) is a rare and beautiful find, originating from the well-known pottery towns of Cliousclat, Provence, and Savoie between 1850 and 1870. Traditionally used to store cutlery after washing, it features cleverly designed drainage holes at the bottom of each terracotta pouch, ensuring practicality while embracing timeless rustic elegance. A light caramel glaze with burgundy sponge decoration provides this piece with a rich patina, making it an exquisite addition to any French country or farmhouse kitchen.

A Piece of History with Authentic Character

Designed to hang on the wall, as was common in Provençal and Savoie kitchens, this handmade French pottery kept utensils safe from nighttime visitors. A visible crack across the top only adds to its authenticity and history, preserving its antique charm. Whether displayed as a collector’s item, used as a unique wall-mounted vase, or as a functional kitchen accent, this rare French cutlery holder is a true statement of history and craftsmanship.
