Handwoven in rural France between 1880 and 1900, this substantial rye straw farm basket is a wonderful example of honest country craftsmanship. Made from tightly coiled rye grass, it has a reassuring weight and solidity that immediately sets it apart from modern decorative baskets.
Originally used around the farm for collecting eggs, fruit, vegetables and freshly cut herbs, it has developed a rich honey coloured patina through decades of everyday use. Every tightly wound coil reflects the skill of the village maker, creating a basket that is both practical and beautifully decorative.
Despite being well over a century old, the basket remains remarkably strong and structurally sound. It would benefit from a gentle clean with warm soapy water if desired, although many collectors choose to leave pieces just as they are, preserving the authentic surface and mellow character that only time can create.
