An elegant, hand painted 19th century Italian majolica footed bowl from Deruta, Umbria, showing the rich colours and floral designs of the Renaissance Revival style.

A Rare Piece of Italian Artistry

Bring home this absolutely beautiful antique Italian majolica compote, dating between 1840 and 1870, crafted in Deruta, Umbria, a region famous for its ceramic traditions. This bowl is a lovely example of the Renaissance Revival style.

This elegant footed piece with a milky Tin Glaze is hand painted with rich cobalt blues, warm yellows, and soft greens in detailed floral and foliate designs. The centre features a stunning pomegranate and leaf motif, known as “foglia e melograno”, framed by graceful scrolling borders, is another Deruta device revived in the 19th century from 16th century patterns. All sitting atop a raised foot. Each delicate brushstroke speaks of the skilled craftsmanship and centuries of Italian tradition.

The piece was likely intended for serving fruit or as a decorative compote, reflecting the Grand Tour taste for Renaissance inspired Italian ceramics. The bowl does have a chip on its base. The missing glaze areas along the rim are production related firing flaws (glaze pull and blister pops), not later damage, further evidence of a handmade, 19th century tin glazed technique.
