A survivor of the Occitanie region. This early 19th century Castelnaudary confit pot is a commanding piece of provincial history, defined by its rich green on lemon glaze contrast and its exceptionally rare, oversized ribbed handles.
This pot has truly lived. Crowned with a deep, mottled green glaze that has been softened by over 180 years of daily use, it tells a story in layers of soft chipping and exposed terracotta. The interior reveals a stunning surprise, a luminous lemon yellow glaze that adds a hidden warmth to the piece.
But the real focal point is the "ears." Exceptionally large and unusually flat, these handles are two inches (5 cm) wide and finished with three distinct ribs. This was a pot shaped for strength and grip beside a busy farmhouse hearth. As a true "Working Stiff," it carries a significant crack through the body and a large chip to the rim, honest signs of a long life that only deepen its grounded presence.
Standing at 12 inches high and spanning 14 inches across the handles, this is a sculptural heavyweight. It holds its own as a standalone object of art, perfect for anchoring a kitchen island or adding a sense of permanence to a modern rustic interior. It’s not a piece for those seeking perfection; it’s for those who find beauty in the enduring utility of rural France.
Giving a beautiful future to pieces with a past.
