Handmade between 1820 and 1840, it is a superb example of the practical village pottery once used every day for carrying, cooling and pouring fresh water.

Part of our Working Stiffs Collection, this is pottery that earned every mark through honest labour.

Its beautifully balanced three handle design wasn't decorative; it was ingenious. The two side handles allowed the heavy vessel to be lifted securely with both hands, while the rear handle acted as a pivot when pouring. This arrangement also made it easy to secure on carts, pack animals or riverboats crossing the Hérault River, giving rise to the name Cruche de Barque.

The rich emerald green copper glaze flowing over the upper half is the unmistakable signature of Saint-Jean-de-Fos. Inside, the pot is finished with a warm mustard-yellow glaze, deliberately chosen so sediment suspended in the water could be easily seen. Beneath the glaze, the unglazed terracotta body remained porous enough to cool its contents naturally through evaporation, a beautifully simple piece of traditional engineering.

Time has softened the glaze, revealing gentle areas of exposed terracotta that only enhance its wonderful character.
